Congregation History

"Foundings of Good Shepherd"
1960 - 1990

April 9, 1961:
The congregation was established as a preaching station of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Twentynine Palms. Worship occurs in the Community Hall as the hall intended for use burns.

October 4, 1961:
The congregation LWML chapter was organized.

Dec 20, 1961:
It was voted at Sunday service that "Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Yucca Valley" shall be the congregation name.

Jan 4, 1962:
Voter's approved the purchase of a 2.5 acre parcel of land at Elk and Mt. View Trails in Yucca Valley.

April 1963:
Good Shepherd was accepted as a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

November 3, 1963:
Ground Breaking ceremonies were held at original church site.

September 27, 1964:
The cornerstone ceremony held. The contents include: Sept 27, 1964 Hi - Desert Star, a list of charter members, the church constitution, a U.S. Silver Quarter and a copy of day's Worship Service. This original cornerstone was opened and re-laid at the site of the present day church during the 1995 dedication of the new church.

November 22, 1964:
The original church is dedicated.

1986:
Building Committee formed to fund a new church due to the old church's limited capacity."

Fall 1989:
A new expansion plan is launched with the purchase of present 5 acre lot located on Yucca Trail.

July 1991:
The 5 acres plot of land clears escrow and the congregation recieves the deed.

November 10, 1991:
Ground Breaking for new church. The new church holds 250 parisioners comfortably in the sanctuary.

October 1994:
Construction of the new church started. Local subcontracters were intentionally chosen so that the money would stay in the Morongo Basin. Laborers for Christ saves the congregation about $250,000 in costs due to their volunteer work.

April 30, 1995:
Hundreds attend the dedication service of the new church. At the time, the construction of the church buildings and purchase of land have an estimated value of one million dollars.

December 5, 2004:
Dedication of Good Shepherd Lutheran Early Childhood Center (GSLECC) Preschool and Daycare.
